Slow And Steady Wins The Weight Loss Race

From Medicinenet.com this blog post will confirm that losing weight is about living a healthy lifestyle, not starving to cut calories.

If you're trying to lose weight, take your time and stay the course if you want to keep the weight off, a new study suggests.

Researchers found that when dieters' weight fluctuated or swung erratically, they were less likely to maintain their weight loss over time.

"It seems that developing stable, repeatable behaviors related to food intake and weight loss early on in a weight-control program is really important for maintaining changes over the long term," said study lead author Emily Feig. She is a former graduate student at Drexel University in Philadelphia.

For the study, the researchers investigated why some people have more trouble maintaining weight loss. The study authors enrolled 183 people in a 12-month weight-loss program and followed them for two years.

The participants relied on meal replacements and set goals, for both their total calories and physical activity. In addition, they reported on food behaviors -- such as cravings, binges and emotional eating -- and took part in weekly weigh-ins in a group setting. One year after the weight-loss program ended, the participants were weighed for a final time.

The study, published Aug. 28 in the journal Obesity, found that the participants who had irregular swings in their weight didn't fare as well as those who reliably lost a consistent amount of weight over the course of the program.

"Settle on a weight-loss plan that you can maintain week in and week out, even if that means consistently losing three-quarters of a pound each week," principal investigator Michael Lowe, a psychology professor at Drexel, said in a university news release.

It's not my regular post

I live in the Houston area and most of the residents on the north side still have power, internet, and other public services, but I don't know how long the services will last. I don't want to minimize this disaster. I've lived in the Houston area for 40 years and rode out many Hurricanes, but I never saw flooding like this. We have tropical storms every year and two foot of rain over a couple days is not unusual, but I think after a few more days we will have had about 4 feet of rain in a week. If we lose public services like power, we lose water cell phone towers, internet, cable, and maybe phones. For how long, no one knows. Hopefully this storm will move east before that happens. Anyway, I might not write any blog posts for a while, but "I'll be back".

Thanks for being a loyal reader and follower. Remember, "don't believe the ads that tell you to buy their product if you want to lose weight. If you want to lose fat, you don't have to spend money. Do your homework and read about healthy foods.

About Comfort Food

We can't live with it and we can't seem to live without it. Comfort food is something we were born with, we grew up with comfort food and is it even possible to kick the habit? I tried to lose weight simply by cutting back on food, but starving only works for a short time and then you end up bingeing.
I tried to substitute carrot sticks for chips and it works because carrots are sweet and you're not really adding calories, but after a while, you start to crave salt. I found that I don't need snack food to get salt. I can eat a hard boiled egg with salt and get protein and take care of the salt craving.
The biggest attraction to comfort food is the high-fat content. It's the fat content that causes the weight gain. Losing weight for me came when I realized I had to give up fat. The low-fat diet is what worked for me. You can't totally give up fat because there is some fat in almost everything. But low-fat diets are basically fruit, vegetables, and a protein source like beans, seafood, poultry, and occasional meat. Poultry and seafood have fats but the fat isn't the same as animal fat. Humans metabolize animal meat differently because the fats in animals are different than poultry. Animal fats will add fat to your body and you can trim everything possible from animal meat but the fat is marbled into the meat and you can't avoid it. Animal fat is in hamburger, sausage, hot dogs, pork, steaks, and any other product like deli meat that comes from an animal.
One of the new diet trends today is to cut back on meat and salt. Get more protein from plant sources like beans, nuts, legumes, and protein powders. I'm sure that you have seen these big sections of your local grocery store packed full of protein supplement products like protein powder, protein bars, protein shakes etc. All of this is meant to give you protein options to replace meat in your diet. It's been proven that a diet of seafood instead of meat is healthier than the average American diet. Think about it for a minute, in many parts of the world seafood is the main source of protein in the diet and now seaweed and algae is another source of high-nutrient food.
So where do we find those comfort foods with a high-fat, high-salt, high-sugar content? It's the processed foods or manufactured foods that you should avoid if you want to reduce body fat. There are healthy substitutes to even bread and cake but you have to do some work and read labels and buy products that you can trust. Expensive food is not always the best. If you're buying bread, for instants, the brands are not all the same quality. Labels are important so do some work and know what you're buying.
You will save money in the grocery store by not buying the snacks and sodas and desserts. Fresh fruit is the "new" dessert. On the news yesterday the announcer was talking about the stock market and how food manufacturers were losing market share in the grocery stores because the new trend is to buy fresh food. And soda makers have changed to making non-calorie drinks with water. The food business is making the biggest change to their industry in the past 40 years. Many of the old companies will disappear in the next few years. What is happening to retail today will happen to the food industry next.

Your Diet Is The Secret To Losing Weight

You've heard about the French and that the French have a diet that would put weight on any American, but they're thin. The men and women of all ages in France are thinner than Americans. When we first looked at their diet we thought that the red wine they drank was the answer. These people eat out as much as we do, they don't even know what low-cal means. So how do they do it? Well, first they walk more. City people don't use cars that much, They walk everywhere. Also, bike riding is more popular, gasoline has always been expensive in Europe and the people have learned to conserve.
Conserving on food is something that France has done since World War II when food was scarce. Also today food prices in Europe are higher than in the U.S. so their meal portions are smaller than ours and combine this with the increased amount of walking the French do and it's much easier for them to control their weight.
Now how does that help you? Well, there are studies going on today that is discovering that our meal portions maybe double of what we need. So how much food do you need? First of all, I think we all know that Americans eat too much and that we are a nation of overweight people. Studies have also been done in the far east. Thailand, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan to see why those people have much less Cancer than North Americans. They found that the people there are very healthy. They don't have the weight problems we do and they are more physically fit. So are we the only country that is habitually overindulging? Well no, Canadians and the English are just starting to change with this new generation of young people. A lot of the Central European and Eastern European countries had the same problems.

So what's the answer? Besides the quantity of food consumed also the quality of the food makes a difference. In France for instance,  they eat smaller meals but they also eat better than we do. In fact, most of Western Europe eats better than we do. And I don't mean more. I mean a better quality of food. Food is made with fresh ingredients and made from scratch every day.
After World War II Europe was pretty much in ruins. By the early 50's tourism was once again a major industry. But the rural parts of the different countries took much longer to recover. So farming communities didn't have electricity for many years.
Europe is really only one generation away from the Big War. It's this new generation today that don't remember the War and the recovery. So what does this have to do with you?
North Americans and some other parts of the western world consume about 3600 calories a day. That's twice the normal about of calories needed to maintain your weight. 267 million people in the U.S. are overweight. That's 2/3's of our adult population. The reason I wrote about France was their overweight population is a much smaller percentage. They have learned how to control their weight and our overweight population can learn something from other countries. Our diets are killing us and we need to wake-up before we lose the next generation.

Do You Want To Be Thin?

Some people believe "if I just lose a little weight, I can be thin too". Well, I never found it that easy. I guess I learned the hard way. I was always a little heavy. Even back in High School, I was what my family called chubby. After I finished school I worked as a truck driver unloading the truck by hand at every stop I made, usually about 40 stops a day. After about 5 years I changed to a construction worker. I did heavy construction, steel, and concrete for bridges and tunnels, the money was better and I had a family to think about.

Both the jobs were hard work and I lost about 10 pounds without trying. I was just burning several thousand calories a day. I was 6 foot tall and weighed about 172. After I left construction and bought a small business, I started to gain weight. I was 32 years old and the next 5 years following I gained about 30 pounds, and before I was 40, I weighed about 220 pounds.

Everyone I knew had noticed and I started to feel self-conscious.  I knew I had to lose weight. I had settled into a lifestyle of self-indulgence. Finally, I joined a Health Club. It was a complete gym with machines, running track, aerobics classes, a separate room for weight lifters, a pool, jacuzzi, steam room and expansive locker room with towels provided.

I did get plenty of exercise but I didn't lose much weight and after a few years, I stopped going. Like most people I was pretty discouraged throughout my 40's and then after I sold my business, I finally got serious about losing weight.

So the reason I'm writing about myself is because I want you to know that my battle with my weight went on for more than 20 years. But I did win the battle because I never quit. I weight 165 today after more than 30 years of trying to lose weight. I reached my goal now and just work on maintaining my weight. And even maintaining is a battle, an everyday battle of watching my calories and exercising. I have no regrets, the exercise has made me a healthier person and staying thin in my senior years lets me be active. I ride a bike, swim, walk a lot, I do yoga and weight train twice a week.

Being thin can be challenging, for some people it comes easy. They're born with the right genes and they can process food without absorbing the fat. Others like me have to work at it. But if I would have taken some advice when I was younger it might have been easier.

I always thought I could do it the easy way. "I'll diet for a few weeks and I'll be thin and ready for the summer." That was a pipe dream, it never happened. Sure, it's easy to drop 5 or 10 pounds, but in a couple weeks, it comes right back. I wasn't serious about my weight, oh sure I wanted to lose weight, but doing what was necessary never happened.

I didn't get serious until I started to feel sluggish, I was tired in the afternoon, my joints started to ache and walking became a chore. My whole adult life I was in denial about my weight and maybe that was because it didn't bother me to be overweight. Then you get older and you start to feel the effects of carrying around the extra pounds, but your still in denial and think the aches and pains are because you're getting older but it's not, it's from carrying around the extra weight and because you aren't active enough it's getting harder to carry the extra weight and your heart is starting to strain under the extra work it has to do.

I think I wrote about this before, but being a little overweight isn't going to keep you from living a healthy life. You can be just as healthy as a thin person if you do regular exercise. If you're not exercising your heart will wear down from the extra strain. Extra weight causes extra strain on your heart and at the later years of middle age your heart can start to give you trouble. So actually, if you're an overweight person, exercise is more important.

Carrying extra fat especially in the waistline is the hardest fat to lose,  and it's the most dangerous to your heart. I don't really understand why, but most of us start to put on the extra pounds in our thirties and forties. Like me, though, we don't work at losing it until it starts to cause problems. By that time, you can lose the ambition to lose fat and that's probably why you see so many seniors overweight.

If you truly want to be thin, you want to do something about it when you're young enough to have the motivation to make the hard choices and get into the exercise routine before it becomes too hard on your body. It's only recently that studies have shown us that extra inches around your waist will shorten your life. The bigger your waist, the shorter your life. Do something about your weight now, while you still have the motivation.

I know I wrote mostly about exercise today but the mistake I made was the diet. I thought exercise was all I had to do. If you don't eat the foods to lose weight, you can exercise half a day every day and nothing will happen. You can't exercise away a bad diet.

Will Weighing Yourself Every Day Help You Lose Weight?

In Short "No". But it helps you keep your eye on the ball if you keep my meaning. Below is a good post that gives some pros and cons.

his approach works especially well for men, study says

I know weighing yourself every morning seems like a pain in the butt, but the idea is to remind you that you're trying to lose weight today. Some people do the same thing with one of the new fitness trackers and some of us use the bathroom scale.
I prefer the fitness trackers. For me, it's a constant reminder that I'm overweight and I'm working to lose weight. But that's me, and you should find something that works for you. The object is that you want to remember your diet every time you look at food. This post proves that a constant reminder really works.
(HealthDay News) -- Checking your weight every day could help you slim down, researchers report.
A two-year Cornell University study found that tracking the results of daily weight checks on a chart helped people lose weight and keep it off.
"You just need a bathroom scale and an Excel spreadsheet, or even a piece of graph paper," study senior author David Levitsky, a professor of nutrition and psychology, said in a university news release.
People who lost weight with this approach in the first year maintained that weight loss throughout the second year, the researcher said. That result is significant because previous studies have shown that about 40 percent of weight loss is regained within a year, and nearly 100 percent is regained within five years, according to the study.
This approach "forces you to be aware of the connection between your eating and your weight," Levitsky explained. "It used to be taught that you shouldn't weigh yourself daily, and this is just the reverse."
While daily weight checks did help women, they had a much greater effect in men.
"It seems to work better for men than women, for reasons we cannot figure out yet," Levitsky said.
